She's been off since Tuesday's opening night.  But the understudy, Savannah Stevenson has been receiving standing ovations apparently.... Clap

The article in today's londonpaper said that there was a possibility that she'd be on tongiht....... depending on the doctor.

Hmm... I'm still undecided, but I might decide to go see GWTW when I'm in London in May! Even though it has Darius in it... (His Billy Flinn was the worst I've EVER seen!), but.... unlike some others, I do quite like Jill Paice! Oooh, think I'll have to see it :D

Jill was back on Saturday, I went to the matinee performance, all I can say is don't beleive the critics, they based their views on a show not quite done, Mark Shenton admitted a lot went before press night, the show ran 3hours 40 mins including interval, and was great- full theatre and standing ovation, I don't understand where the critics are coming from THB and now they seem to have tweaked it and sorted out the effects and running time its not the show they reviewed so don't let them influence you.  I didnt hear a bad word in the interval, people were enjoying it and looking forward to act 2, the songs are great, they fit the character and the particular scenes obviously bits and peices could be different or left out, but the narrating works well, as if you are watching the story and reading the book at times adding more to the image, its very clever,  - perhaps too clever for a critic only going because its his job but people usually go to see a production because they think they may like the theme - I loved it and because I have read the book and seen the film,  I could see how they had worked this adaptation and enjoyed the subtle and clever way they have managed to encapsulate so many things, the person I went with had no inkling about Gone With The Wind apart from the names " Scarlett Ohara and Rhett Butler" and they got the story and enjoyed the production.

^ Glad you finally got to go and enjoyed it.

Especially glad that Jill was back in time Clap

I agree with you as regards the critics, I think they were all over it unnecessarily, but I, personally, didn't think it was a brilliant production.

from 12th April till now a lot has changed from what I have heard and read, even on press night 22nd the show was running too long and things were still being ironed out, the show has been tweaked and tightened, some of Scarletts songs, weaker ones have gone and the effects are great, on press night one reviewer mentions a smouldering flag and a purple light when Atlanta burns, well it wasnt like that on saturday, - smoke, the sky red smell of burning, chaos sound of explosions and gunfire, the sound effects come from all around the theatre and little bits of "ash" falling from the heights.  I especially liked the projucted wrapround skyline, - I think you would be suprised at how it has come on since 12th April. it is a shame everyone bundled in on previews and rated it on a show that is changed.  I do find it odd Trevor had a press night so early, he must have known he would change and up the effects etc - or does he like the idea of having the press slate him, and then inviting people to judge for themselves, it just seems odd that he would lay himself open to the slating, when he has continued to hone the show. I heard nothing but praise in the interval, in the queue for the loo, why do they never have enough for the ladies!!!

I see what you're saying but it wasn't a musical that instantly grabbed me. That's my personal take on it.

Things may very well be different from when I saw it 16 days ago, however, the essence of the production and the storyline will still remain and that didn't grab me like some other musicals have.

ah, well thats different and understandable, I have been to productions where I have been bored due to the actual concept and plot - have to say I went with someone who had no idea about GWTW, and not into love stories or period stuff etc, and  he loved it too - but I wouldnt have been suprised if he hadnt got it or was bored. I don't know if he cried like I did though, I swore I wouldn't but on two occasions it happened.

I have to say, that when they were reading out the names of those who had died in the war I had tears in my eyes - think that that also had something to do with some wonderful singing voices.

Also, Rhetts's "Once Upon A Time" after Bonnie's death was heartbreaking.

don't start me off - the girls in front of us when singing about their sons and loved ones  killed, were nearly in tears - I found that song very moving in contrast to the young mens eagerness to go to war to impress the girls and come back heros, their light heartedness about it - and the reality of their deaths was palpable, although the critics found lyrics in the war song funny, I thought it very moving.
and yes, the lullaby, I couldnt stop tears runnig down my face - the contrast when he sang to her to get her to sleep and the tears streaming down his face singing to her when she was dead - does he cry every time, he said he does - I can beleive it.

Will review soon but i went expecting to hate it...and i actually LOVED it Unsure so unexpected. If i had gone with high expectations i dont know how i would have felt..

Unsure

I could see how people wouldnt like certain things though...

Running time was about 3hours 15 mins!! (possibly just under)

from what i have read.. lots of narration has been cut (there was still some... and almost none of it was annoying) and some songs have gone.. YES there was walking in circles.. and it didnt bother me.. because i was so unexpectedly captivated by it.

nearlly in tears?? nearly??  I was a mess :rofl; for bits of the fast half and well.. almost all of the second (worse at certain points of course). I cry lots in the theatre..but cried even more than usual in this. Even my mum cried.. and i heard lots of sniffing around me good grief im not sure i've recovered yet Unsure

will review properly soon, possibly.

looking forward to your review - I went thinking I would be bored - I found the film hard going at times.
I have read that the show has changed a lot from when I saw it (26th April) songs have been cut, narration lost - lyrics even changed, some scenes have been changed.
I have to say I loved it and will be going again to see what has changed! I found it hard to equate what the critics had said and what we saw to be honest - I was in tears two times, when the women sang after the list was read, and when Bonny died and those around were dabbing too!!

I saw it last Monday and really enjoyed it :D I actually liked Darius, and Jill was just..... amazing!
The only thing that really bothered me were the accents.... nowhere near actual southern accents!! But... despite that, I thought it was a very moving show. Especially during the 2nd act it was hard not to cry at some points! And it didn't feel like an hour and half to me!

I would love to see it again, but somehow I'm afraid it ill have closed by the time I get back to London... Shame, really! I have to say, although I quite liked the songs and all, they don't really stick in your head.

Well, go see it if you've still got the chance!!

the accents -  Darius said they did a lot of research,..Rhett was a Southerner, but spent a lot of time up North so his accent would have had some northern influence in some ways.
Scarletts family are irish, she had a first generation Irish american accent - so wouldnt sound overly Southern as we think of it.
I thought Darius' accent was about the best, but probably because it was such a deep booming rich accent - it stuck in my mind more.
I dont think Gable in the film needed to put on any accent or tried to, he spoke in his usual southern accent anyway.

Would love to hear the review, Unicorn.  I am going back soon and am wondering what they have cut, I beleive they have cut down the second lullaby after Bonny dies which is a shame because that was such an emotional scene.
evidently some man was allowed up on stage at the end of the show on saturday to propose to his girlfriend, they were over the moon and there is a post about it on Darius' facbook thankng him and the cast,

My biggest problem with the accents was that they weren't consistant at all! Especially Scarlett, she went from sorta southern, back to more british english, back to southern... Very annoying! I think Ashley come closest to some sort of a southern accent.

Anyway, I have a thing for accents anyway, and being some sort of a southern girl ;) it annoys me that they never seem to be able to copy a southern accent the right way. Not in movies, not on stage. Prissie disappointed me!! (former) slaves have very strong accents, couldn't really hear that at all...

But, as I said, other than that I really enjoyed the show!

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/118266.html    i'm not over surprised that its closing..but i am sad.. for the cast..and crew and everything...

I never did review it..but i feel it deserves it..so here goes (it will be a short one i think).

As you know, I loved it. Whever it was they were trying to do, and however they were trying to convey things, emotionally etc...worked for me. I could see how it might not work though.. but it just clicked with my brain and emotions exactly right. .it just worked
In some ways its like the film, in others it felt like reading a book.

The set- i liked the relatively empty set used with the revolve.. especially when it turned into their house
the costumes- apart from them being a teensy bit short (were they supposed to be?) i lived them.. oh little bonnie's outfit  my mum and I were crying when we saw that

I found that I had to do a lot of imagining Unsure if that makes sense.. like int he bit where they were looking over all the wounded soldiers.. and in the burning of atlanta (at the start of this i was crininging that it was just going to be a little fizzle..but then..  it got better.. and i was involved and absorbed that my imagination ran away with itself and it seemed even more dramatic.

The narration mostly worked well. Once or twice it annoyed me but mostly, what they had decided to leave in worked well and made it feel even more like reading a book. It was a really interesting experience.

The cast- well WOW what a cast.. so hardworking, so great!
Jill Paice- Scarlet- oh WOW she was BRILLIANT, stunning!!  just WOW great casting. Everything about her performance was great (ok ellabell, i dont know about accents but to me it only wavered a couple of times..even if what it wavered from wasnt perfect i dont know). Anyway, her voice was great.. i thought early in the show some of her high notes were a bit screechy but after that it was great..it just got stronger and stronger.. Acting wise she was just fantastic.. so..so..... scarlet.. she must be so exhausted, boithe physically and emotionally.. how does she do it? almost never offstage..even when i thought she was.. she was still on..just not centre stage. I SO understood her as a character, she had so many layers and dimensions to her.  and she certainly progressed through the show.i was impressed! aww her way of saying 'ashley' as he show went on was increasingly heartbreaking and desperate.. in such a great way. I was so 'on her side'. so overall.. WOW to Jill.

Darius- Rhett Butler- very tall! and commanding with a lovely deep voice. he was very in control....His singing was great too.. i was happily impressed by his acting having never seen him on stage before. and goodness.. his second ;once upon a time' sung to bonnie.. i could see it coming.. so i cried.. and then he sung.. and then.. cried more.. totally heartbreaking.  oo oo and of course he got the famous line.. 'Frankly my dear...' etc  ... when he finally delivered it.. he paused halfwaythough..the audience giggled in anticipation.. and THEN he finished the line.. saying it in a slightly different way to the film (i think).. but in a way that worked.

I think it would take too long to mention everyone else Unsure but i liked pretty much everyone
mammy was fantastic and i quite liked Melanie... and Ellen O'Hara.. and and and ok i could go on. there were a few acent slips here and there..but otherwise.. they were great overall.  Clap Clap Clap

I mostly liked the staging. I didnt love the use of the 6 men to represent the horse when scarlet's father frist came onstage...yet it didnt bother me when they acted as the hrse in the scene with bonnie.. well it did bother me.. but not the way not was done.  Unsure

The songs.. i loved them! i thought they all pretty much fitted as the show went along.. and i really liked some of the funny chorus numbers. There was only one that when they started singing... i thought.. eh? .. i cant remember what it was though Unsure i wish i knew the song titles I even quite liked Prissy's song even though it was a teensy bit random..

The music wasnt memorable on the whole.. but i enjoyed it at the time. It was like reading a good book and as you go on you remember what it was like to read a certain passage, how it felt, and what was going on, but not the exact words. That is what this was like, it felt like reading a book in a way, with music that served its purpose (more than) and then you turned the page.... and while it was still 'there' in my mind, i didnt remember it exactly. Like with a book, there were some bits i liked better than others.. sone 'chapters' in a way. The narration made it feel  even more like a book.. as did the parts where i was imagining so much more than was on the stage.

I could see how people wouldn't like the fact that the music wasnt incredibly memorable or catchy, but for me it didnt matter..and even worked to its advantage (this doesnt mean i wouldnt like a cast recording, because i really REALLY would. i suppose there is little chance of that now )

I dont think i have articulated this very well, but i know i enjoyed it, i was totally absorbed int he story and in the characters (mainly scarlet). and i cried and cried (i always cry at the theatre .. but this was really a lot ).

I am sad it is closing because I liked it and would ahve considered going back had it lasted another few months, and for the cast and everyone that has worked on it. I guess its sad when any show closes, particularly so soon after opening.

Well, i'll just have to look back and remember that I liked it    even with its faults.. and i could see why people wouldnt like it..but i did

I'm really surprised it's closing htis early - I would have thought it'd have been more successful.  Mind you, not a good time for theatre-going right now I guess.   Unsure

thanks for hte review, the show impacted on you the same way it did me, I found it sucked you into the story, as if you were watching the book being read - my imagination seemed to pick up on what they were trying to portray! I didnt mind the men as horses either, it just seemed to work!!
I am so upset this is closing, although I am giong on Saturdaym thank god - I would have been devestated if I had booked for a later show as I inteneded, !!!
I do hope Darius goes on to more musicals, he is just great on stage, has had overwhelming praise from reviewers and opened some others eyes to his talent.

What a shame this is closing - I saw it last week and loved it. It was very true to the book. Darius was just amazing as Rhett, and I hope he does more musical theatre soon.
